Birthdays can be a splash—literally. On these college campuses, if you have a birthday and there’s a fountain somewhere on college grounds, there’s a very good chance you’re going into it.
Here are 8 schools with the birthday-in-the-fountain tradition:
As tradition serves, you get dunked in the Westcott Fountain when you’re a freshman and when you turn 21. Also, students have been known to have “Fountain Flings,” where they skinny dip in Westcott. However, be careful, as there are web cams near the fountain (you never know what’s going to get caught on the live feed!).
This school modifies the dunking tradition. Swap the fountain for a lake! Students have also been known to be thrown in even when there’s snow on the ground. Brrrr.
“Happy Birthday—now pay this fine!” At Stetson, students thrown in the fountain that get caught by a Public Safety officer could face a $50 fine. Yikes.
At Hendrix, students are just fountain-happy. Yes, you will probably be thrown into the fountain on your birthday, but you could also be thrown in for other various events and milestones.
This College Prowler student review says it all:
It could come when you least expect it. Students get hunted down, nabbed, carried, and tossed into the Fairy Fountain on their birthdays. Your only hope is if you have a birthday that doesn’t fall during the school year.
You go into “The Pond” with this tradition. Only “The Pond” is not an actual pond—it’s just the name of the fountain (tricky!).
If you look closely, the schools on this list mostly have warmer climates. There’s a reason for that. No one wants to be thrown into this kind of fountain on their birthday.
