There are some things that are off limits at particular colleges. Some schools have restrictions regarding residence life, others regarding academics.
What’s so bad about TGG? Well, because Betty White’s character Rose is from the fictional town of “St. Olaf, Minnesota,” outsiders just assume that “St. Olaf” is “that town from ‘The Golden Girls.’” And Rose will say some crazy things about her hometown on the show, not necessarily stuff students and residents would want to be associated with.
However, despite the nagging pop culture reference, students and the College have also embraced the connection. When the series was still on the air, the school would send St. Olaf merchandise to White to wear on the show. In 1992, Betty White made her second visit to the school and reported that she received a warm welcome, despite worrying that the community would reject her for her character’s bumbling cluelessness that often gets linked to the school. So while students claim to hate the association, they also seem to not-so-secretly love it.
